For the ninth consecutive year, the “Eternal Rivals,” Panathinaikos and Olympiakos will face each other in the Greek basketball league final tourney after doing away with semi-final contenders.Both last month were knocked out of the Euroleague basketball tournament semi-finals after having won that title three years in a row between them.In the Greek semis, Olympiakos had a tougher time, coming from a 60-46 deficit to force an overtime to beat upstart Panionios, 73-70 on a three-point bomb by captain and sharpshooting guard Vassilis Spanoulis at the buzzer.He scored 22 points to show a resurgence in his game in leading Olympiakos to a 3-0 sweep of its best-of-five series that was a cakewalk for the Reds.Panathinaikos put on a three-point long-bomb show to beat back PAOK by 72-65, hitting 14 long-range shots to also complete a 3-0 sweep in their series.Greek basketball essentially has a season just to eliminate other teams who have virtually no chance of making the finals against the two dominant powers who have more money to bring in stars.Panathinaikos has the home court advantage in the best-of-five final that will open on May 22. Panionios and PAOK will play for third place.last_img
