Barnsley 3-5 Everton: Marc Roberts own-goal sends Everton into third round of the League Cup

first_imgEverton scraped through to the third round of the League Cup after needing an extra-time own goal to edge past Barnsley at Oakwell.Barnsley took a surprise lead in the tie with first Sam Winnall and then Marley Watkins putting the hosts 2-0 ahead.Goals from Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith levelled it up before Dan Crowley restored the lead for the hosts.Romelu Lukaku scored to take the game to extra time before a Marc Roberts own goal and a second Lukaku goal sent Everton through to the next round.John Stones, who started the game despite handing in a transfer request, was at fault for the first goal as Everton failed to clear the ball before Winnall took possession to drill in a shot in to the bottom corner of the net. Still interested Chelsea?Things got worse before they got better for the Toffees as Barnsley got a second after an old-fashioned route one ball was not dealt with by Joel Robles leaving Watkins to take advantage to score.Everton lifted themselves after half-time when Mirallas fired home a delightful volley after Barnsley did their best impression of Everton’s earlier defending when failing to clear away the danger.Everton eventually got level as Naismith was left unmarked to head home and it looked as though the visitors would run away with it from there.However that was not the case as Barnsley snatched the lead back immediately when Crowley finished emphatically after good work from Reece Wavara on the wing.The game to yet another twist before the final whistle when Gerard Deulofeu’s low cross was instinctively stabbed home by Lukaku after 78 minutes as the game entered extra-time.Deulofeu caused havoc again for the winner as his cross, meant for Lukaku, put past his own goalkeeper by Roberts.Lukaku then added his second with four minutes remaining to secure the win as Everton advanced to round three where they will face Reading.
