Major Events Spark Economic Growth Strategic Partnerships for Nova Scotia

first_imgTrade Centre Limited (TCL) is helping Nova Scotia’s economic growth by attracting research conferences, top-flight musical artists and exhibitors from around the world to Nova Scotia. TCL released its annual report today, Sept. 10, for the period of April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012. The report highlights the impact of major events, strategic partnerships and national and international conferences on the province’s economy over the past year. “These types of events create a number of community and economic benefits for our entire province,” said David Wilson, acting Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. “Hosting major events in Nova Scotia helps create jobs, business development opportunities and new partnerships that grow Nova Scotia’s economy and attracts new visitors to our province.” In 2011-12, TCL facilities hosted 848 events that attracted 638,850 attendees. TCL revenues for the year were $14.2 million, with an operating loss, before depreciation, of $32,335. Total direct spending by event planners, delegates and exhibitors in Nova Scotia was $100 million. Of this, $75.5 million was new money to Nova Scotia’s economy, which generated 1,737 person years of employment and $6.1 million in provincial tax revenues. “We have focused our approach on attracting events that offer a range of tourism and economic development opportunities for Nova Scotia,” said Scott Ferguson, president and CEO of TCL. “Strong relationships with partners around the world have enabled us to position Nova Scotia on the international stage and, as a result, attract first-class events and talent to our province.” For more information on TCL’s 2011-12 performance, visit www.tradecentrelimited.com .
