The editor of the newspaper Nota Bene has also requested asylum because he fears for his safety. “First the offices of Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realny Azerbaijan were shut down for alleged fire safety violations then, on 26 May, the owner of their premises suddenly rescinded their lease and they had to vacate immediately,” Reporters Without Borders said. “They would have us believe this is just a coincidence. These are the methods of an authoritarian regime.”The press freedom organisation added: “If President Ilham Aliev wants to protect the press, he should help these two dailies find new premises. The 41 employees and contributors to these newspapers are now without any source of income, some of them feel threatened and the country’s press is all the poorer.”The 14 Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realny Azerbaijan journalists submitted their political asylum requests to the US, German, British and Norwegian embassies and the office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). They include Gundelik Azerbaijan editor Uzeir Jafarov, who said they were seeking asylum because of persecution, and because arrests and attacks made it impossible for them to work as journalists.Jafarov was attacked and beaten on 20 April after given evidence at the trial of Eynulla Fatullaev, the founder of Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realny Azerbaijan, who received a 30-month prison sentence the same day for “defaming” and “insulting” Azerbaijanis in an article about Armenia. The satirical website www.tinsohbeti.com, whose editor, Habib Muntezir is based in Germany, has meanwhile been inaccessible again since 21 May because of a hacker attack on the Site5 server that hosts it. Muntezir is convinced the attack was deliberately targeted. It is not the first time that the site has been attacked. June 8, 2021 Find out more News Help by sharing this information “We’ll hold Ilham Aliyev personally responsible if anything happens to this blogger in France” RSF says Russian peacekeepers deny foreign reporters access to Nagorno-Karabakh to go further Reporters Without Borders voiced concern today at the increase in the number of Azerbaijani journalists seeking asylum in western embassies in Baku in reaction to the arbitrary closure of their newspapers and the 30-month prison sentence imposed on newspaper editor Eynulla Fatullayev. The number of journalists who have taken this step in the past two and a half weeks now stands at 24. The embassies at which asylum requests have been made include those of Germany, Britain and the United States.“The recourse to this measure highlights the difficulties that independent and opposition journalists have been encountering for many years despite their repeated appeals for help,” Reporters Without Borders said. “The international community must now get to grips with the issue of press freedom in Azerbaijan.”None of the journalists has so far received a response from the embassies. The German and British authorities have nonetheless told them their requests would be considered. PHOTO/Timothy OlobuluNAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 13 – The ministry of sports has surprisingly included Deputy President William Ruto’s Sh50mn African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification promise to Harambee Stars in the team’s final approved budget for the preparation of the biennial championship. The Deputy President made a promise to the team that qualification to the 2019 showpiece will attract a hefty reward from the government but now, it appears the ministry has included this as part of the Sh244mn approved budget for the team towards the biennial championship. This promise was made on December 19, 2017 when Ruto hosted the team at his official residence in Karen after their triumph in the CECAFA Senior Challenge trophy held here at home where he also rewarded the team with Sh5mn.RECAP: Harambee Stars promised Sh50mn for AFCON qualificationAccording to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Nick Mwendwa the amount will be deducted from the entire approved budget which they hope to get by end of week.Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama hands over a jersey and signed ball to Deputy President William Ruto when he paid the team a courtesy call at the Kasarani Stadium on Friday October 12, 2018. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya“We had forwarded a budget estimate of Sh244mn for AFCON beginning from the Ghana game to the tournament in Egypt. We also had a separate budget for the team that plays in the Olympic qualifiers but the ministry through the Principle Secretary told us that in football, all we are getting is the Sh244mn until July 1,” Mwendwa said.He added the Federation will keep its promise of giving the team 70pc of the Sh50mn to divide among themselves while the federation keeps the remaining 30pc to aid in preparations. With this, the players are set to receive Sh35mn to divide amongst themselves.“We had a deal with the players and we will stick to it. Once they come in to camp next week we will give them the money hoping it comes into our accounts early and they will divide it among themselves,” Mwendwa noted. This means that the team will now have a sum total of Sh209mn to facilitate all their plans for AFCON 2019 including the final qualifier against Ghana and the intended three-week training camp in France as well as the final tournament in Egypt. The federation however received a Sh20mn boost from betting firm Betin of which Sh15mn will go towards the preparation kitty. FKF boss Mwendwa also noted they are set to unveil two more partners by next week to boost their finances.Football Kenya Federation boss Nick Mwendwa and Betin Marketing Director Carlo Buttaci exchange documens after signing a Sh20mn sponsorship deal for the Harambee Stars on Macrh 12, 2019“We want to give the coach and the team everything they ask for. This money will go into preparations of the team as well as settling bills from last season including Starlets’ unpaid allowances. The team will camp at Safari Park this time and so will the Under-23 Olympics team,” Mwendwa explained.“It is expensive to undertake all these things and that is why we want to bring on board more sponsors. The camp in France is expensive, we will play two or three friendly games there and it is also expensive to have them,” he further stated. At the same time, the FKF boss has estimated a cash reward of Sh7mn for the team for any win they pick in Egypt and if, against all odds they go all the way and lift the title, then the team will earn a whooping Sh120mn reward.“That is what the coach has proposed and that is what other teams do. We have tried to negotiate a bit with the players but that is just about the estimate of what they will earn with one win. This money is not in the Sh244mn budget and that is why we need more partners on board,” Mwendwa noted.According to plans, the team is set to travel to France on May 15 for the training camp at a location selected by the coach in Paris.0Shares0000(Visited 2 times, 1 visits today)

Bhagwat Jha Azad, the minister of state who got independent charge of the prestigious civil aviation portfolio, took exactly 48 hours to mouth his first policy pronouncement. He hit out at the system of the executive class on the Airbus fleet of Indian Airlines, described it as “inconsistent with our avowed socialistic principles”, and declared his intention to abolish it. Cost of introducing the system three months ago: Rs 11 lakh. Cost of abolition: Rs 3 lakh.A.B.A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury, the newly-appointed railway minister, took four days to make his first policy statement. He travelled to Calcutta and drove unannounced to Howrah station, where, in the presence of awed officials, he mingled with passengers and listened to their complaints. The same afternoon, he addressed his first press conference as railway minister, and announced that he wanted to give complete autonomy to the general managers. The others who should feel happy at least avoided making public statements. P.C. Sethi, whose appointment as home minister upset bookmakers’ calculations, attended the Assam talks as his first engagement in office. But he made it a point to take with him R. Venkataraman, the defence minister, who had been acting as the home minister, and requested him to carry on as chief negotiator. P. Shiv Shanker, the fat-cat among the ministers, stuck to his smaller office as petroleum minister at Shastri Bhavan, while the larger chunk of the staff now under him sat at the Energy Ministry housed in Shram-Shakti Bhavan.advertisementN.K.P. Salve (left) and H.K.L. Bhagat: InductionMixed Rewards: Buta Singh, the only Sikh in the Council of Ministers, was elated to assume Independent charge of the glamorous sports portfolio on the eve of the ninth Asiad in the capital. C.P.N. Singh, who had slid down the hierarchical steps last year when he was transferred from the powerful Defence Ministry to the backroom Department of Science and Technology, notched up a gain this time as he became the minister of state for the newly-created and ponderously named Department of Non-conventional Energy Sources. Singh was too enthralled at the prospect of getting a bonus foothold to complain about the fact that he now has to shuttle between two bosses, Mrs Gandhi, who is the minister for science and technology, and Shiv Shanker, who holds the charge of energy, conventional and otherwise.Heady excitement marked the two older men entering the ministry this time – N.K.P. Salve and H.K.L. Bhagat. Salve, a seasoned lawyer, proved his skill at treading cautiously in the very first week when he described himself as a “former journalist” but hedged his bets when called upon to comment on the Bihar Press Bill. Bhagat laboriously went round the Asiad construction sites, tramping with commendable diligence over the raw cement, but as in Salve’s case, caution prevailed and he refrained from making any public pronouncements.Vasant Sathe (left) and A.P. Sharma: DemotionAmong the dispirited back-benchers were Vasant Sathe, whose transfer from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, right under the arc lamp of glamour, to the seedy corridors of the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry, was archly termed by his critics as the shift from “culture to agriculture”. To make the best of a bad bargain, three rooms were being pulled down in one corner of Shastri Bhavan to set up a new chamber for Sathe. No doubt, all care is being taken to ensure that the suave minister’s aesthetic sensibilities are not hurt in the least.A.P. Sharma divested of his twin empire of civil aviation and tourism, sulkily avoided the press. As the new communications minister, the first gift he received for the house-warming party was the depressing news of the failure of the much-touted Indian communication satellite INSAT-1A. Hopefully, his future at his new ministry will not be as ill-starred as his beginning.

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s sweeping education reform bill has passed final reading in the legislature, only one week after it was introduced by Education Minister Zach Churchill. The governing Liberals used their majority to pass Bill 72 by a vote of 25-21.The legislation dissolves the province’s seven regional school boards as of March 31 and replaces them with a 15-member provincial advisory council, while keeping local school advisory councils in place along with board administrations. In another contentious move it takes principals, vice-principals and senior supervisory staff from the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and rolls them into a new association affiliated with the union.Premier Stephen McNeil says he believes the changes will give communities a stronger voice because they will get direct access to the minister.NDP education critic Claudia Chender calls the notion “absurd” and says the concerns of parents will end up falling to members of the legislature. The legislation is largely based on recommendations contained in a report by consultant Avis Glaze.
TORONTO – Chinese online payment platform Alipay has partnered with tech firm SnapPay Inc. to enable Canadian retailers to accept Chinese currency from Chinese shoppers through a mobile wallet.Alipay North America president Souheil Badran says the company wants to offer Canadian merchants the opportunity to access the Chinese market. He says 700 Canadian merchants already accept Alipay. But the partnership gives the payment platform an opportunity to aggressively explore opportunities for expansion in the education, winery, restaurant and retail sectors. The company touts the increasingly lucrative role Chinese consumers could play for Canadian businesses, given the country’s growing middle class.Alipay, originally created by Chinese online shopping giant Alibaba.com, was launched in 2004 and has more than 520 million active users. It is now owned by Ant Financial Services Group, a “related company” to Alibaba.“We want to continue offering Chinese consumers visiting Canada the ability to pay as they would in China. But we also want to offer Canadian merchants the opportunity to access the Chinese market,” Badran said. The launch comes as Alibaba gears up to host heavy hitters including the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory at its Gateway ’17 Canada conference Monday in Toronto.Trudeau will take the stage with Alibaba executive chairman and founder Jack Ma at the conference aimed at promoting e-commerce opportunities for Canadian businesses in China.Ma hosted Trudeau, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Canadian business representatives at the company’s campus in Hangzhou, China last September.Note to readers: This is a corrected story.
