Microsoft Wishes You Happy Porn Browsing in New Vomit-Filled Video, Then Retracts Ad

first_imgThe ads are, as a group, delightfully off-brand. They’re too cool for Microsoft, which has generally dwelt somewhere between stodgy and cutesy in terms of marketing.Better still, they show that Microsoft just might be listening to what users really need: Web Slices to get quick views of personally important sites without wasting unnecessary time browsing between full-on tabs; sharing accelerators for sending along lolcats or other media with a single right-click; and yes, a way to keep the missus from finding out about your love affair with Suicide Girls. The features are nifty in themselves. We’d totally use them if we weren’t already committed to Chrome and Firefox. Can Google and Microsoft Be Challenged with Open Source Search?

first_imgalex williams Tags:#enterprise#news Open-source search has some major advantages compared to its competitors. First of all, it’s free. Second, it stands up in comparison to the largest, proprietary search vendors. Third, there is a growing ecosystem around open-source search that makes it far easier to implement than ever before. The combination makes open-source search a potent alternative to Google and Microsoft, arguably two of the biggest players in the enterprise search market.Lucid ImaginationLucid Imagination considers itself a bit like Red Hat. The company provides services for Lucene and Apache Solr, open-source search technologies. This week, Lucid Imagination is releasing a certified version of Lucene 2.9. What this means is that Lucid has tested and debugged Lucene to make it palatable for organizations to implement. As a Lucid executive said today, it’s Lucene with a “shampoo and a blow dry.” It can be integrated quickly into an enterprise search environment. For example, a major online retailer downloaded the certified version and had it running within a few days across its Canadian, German and United Kingdom sites.Lucene is downloaded several thousand times a day. It is used by more than 4,000 organizations. Many organizations have switched to Lucene to replace proprietary search software products. Beyond the issue of cost, organizations are using Lucene’s flexible and scalable architecture for developing highly sophisticated full-text search applications.Compared to Lucene, Google Search Appliance prices according to the number of searches performed. This can get pretty costly for larger scale search efforts. The API can be customized to some extent but Google protects its core technology, which requires the customer to do some work arounds. Google is targeting enterprise customers to do search within Sharepoint and in a number of other ways in the Enterprise. Earlier this month, Google announced Commerce Search, a service designed for e-tailers to customize searches for their products.Microsoft is banking on Sharepoint to position its search functionality within the enterprise. In particular, with Sharepoint 2010, Microsoft will launch FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. Based on the FAST search technology, it combines the FAST’s high-end search capabilities with SharePoint. But the issue here is again how much customization the customer can actually do with the search technology. Due to its proprietary nature, the customer has little control over how it can be customized. Customers are forced to wait to see what features Microsoft develops. No doubt, Lucene is a super-hot player in the enterprise search market. And who’s to gain? Enterprise customers who want world-class search at cost you just can’t beat. Even better is the fact that one company, Lucid Imagination, is dedicated to supporting Lucene. The company has the chance to score big in the market, especially with certified offerings such as what they are providing for Lucene 2.9. Open-source search is here to stay. The proprietary players in the market will continue to keep significant market share but open-source search has to be considered in the mix as more companies seek to take control of its search environments. Union officials say opioids endanger guards want protocols changed

first_imgEDMONTON – Union officials say opioids are spreading to prisons and that’s putting prison guards at risk.Jason Godin, president of the Union of Correctional Services, tells CTV News that officers can come into contact with fentanyl in a number of ways, such as doing first aid on an inmate who has overdosed, by handling mail and by conducting searches.Godin says back in mid-July at the maximum-security Edmonton Institution, six officers were exposed to the potentially deadly opioid. Two of those were taken to hospital, and another had to be given naloxone, a medication to reverse an opioid overdose. At Bowden Institution, one guard had to be hospitalized for 48 hours after coming into contact with fentanyl.Godin says such incidents should be considered a wakeup call that protocols need to change for workers in this field. He says police officers start taking safety precautions when dealing with just one gram of an unknown substance, but for prison guards that threshold is three grams.“We should be the same as any law enforcement.”In a statement to CTV, the Correctional Service of Canada declined to answer questions on the issue but said it issued a protocol on the matter this past July.“This protocol provides staff with guidelines on which personal protective equipment and strategies to use when the presence of highly toxic substances is suspected in order to keep employees, offenders and members of the public safe.”At the Remand Centre, a provincial institution, Alberta Union of Provincial Employees president Guy Smith says workers have noticed an increase in opioids.“Our members have noticed a lot more on the front lines,” says Smith, adding none of his members have yet come into contact with fentanyl.(CTV Edmonton)last_img read more

In Francois Legaults Coalition Avenir Quebec caucus men outearn women

first_imgQUEBEC — Within Quebec Premier Francois Legault’s Coalition Avenir Quebec caucus, the most prestigious and best-paid jobs most often go to men.Of 75 legislature members, 65 of them — 42 men and 23 women — have extra functions that earn them a boost in pay. While the pay scale varies according to the functions fulfilled, there are more men than women at every level of extra pay, according to an analysis of the legislature members’ salaries carried out by The Canadian Press. At a time when all politicians tout gender parity and pay equality, the size of a politician’s wallet remains a good measure of progress. And in Legault’s party, legislature members who wear suits and ties are more likely to outearn their female counterparts. In 2019, women make up 44 per cent of the legislature members who income reaches $167,482, 33 per cent of those at the $129,000 level, 25 per cent of those making $119,630 and 30 per cent of those whose salaries reach $114,845.The most prestigious and well-paid parliamentary roles (president of the National Assembly, caucus president, chief whip, parliamentary leader) are all served by men.Women serve some lesser roles, including assistant to the whip or assistant to the president, with a lower pay to match.Others can hope for a parliamentary appointment, which is often seen as a consolation prize for those not tapped to be part of cabinet. The only level of the pay scale dominated by women is the lowest one, reserved for legislature members making a base salary, which currently sits at $95,704.Among the Coalition Avenir Quebec’s team, 20 per cent of women weren’t offered a special role, compared to eight per cent of men.Legault’s cabinet is currently made up of 14 men and 12 women. When the caucus president, chief whip and premier are counted, women make up 41 per cent.Legault sits at the top of the pay scale, with a salary of nearly $200,000 per year.Fifteen men and 12 women are included in the second tier of the pay scale, whose revenue is boosted to $167,482 and includes cabinet ministers and the president of the national assembly. The position of parliamentary assistant, a function that allows an elected official to assist a minister, is often considered a gateway to cabinet. There are four times as many men as women in this category, at 16 compared to four. The politician who has had the biggest pay cut since the election is MarieChantal Chasse, who went from environment minister to a simple committee chair, and consequently saw her pay decline from $167,482 to $119,630.Her successor, Benoit Charette, made the exact same journey in reverse, boosting his salary by $47,852 in the process.Jocelyne Richer, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

OSU field hockey seniors honored as Buckeyes drop 2011 home finale

The No. 18 Ohio State field hockey team (8-6, 2-1) fell, 3-0, to the No. 17 Iowa Hawkeyes (9-3, 2-2) Saturday afternoon in their home finale. The Buckeyes honored their senior captains, Jenn Sciulli and Ally Tunitis before the matchup against the Hawkeyes. Although the Buckeyes were not victorious, the players and fans in attendance were able to celebrate the senior day with their captains who have combined for 53 wins and 116 starts since joining the program in 2008. “It is a great honor to be playing at such a great school athletically,” said senior goalkeeper and Macungie, Pa. native, Tunitis. “Just being able to represent Ohio State is important to me.” After the loss Saturday, Tunitis fell to 8-6 on the season, recording one save. The Buckeyes also recognized senior back Sciulli, a native of Palmyra, Pa., who leads the conference in defensive stops and tied her 2010 season high in the first half of Saturday’s game. She is now tied for second on the OSU all-time list with 22 career stops. “It was a great honor to be recognized before the game [Saturday] after spending four years here,” Sciulli said. “Unfortunately we did not get the result we were looking for today.” After the Buckeyes began the game pressuring in the first half, the Hawkeyes capitalized on their first scoring opportunity and netted their first goal at the 24-minute mark. As the Buckeyes headed into halftime trailing by just one goal and their hopes still high, they eventually fell short as the Hawkeyes scored two more to close the game out with a 3-0 win. The loss Saturday ended the Buckeyes six-game winning streak and brought them back to the middle of the pack in the Big Ten standings sitting at 2-1. The team will have to play a full game if they want success to find them down the stretch said coach Anne Wilkinson. They now have four games left on their regular season schedule. “We need to be able to play a full 70 minutes,” Wilkinson said. “You can’t check out for even a minute against a ranked team and we need to continue to bring the energy out.” Despite the recent loss, Tunitis recognized some positives the Buckeyes can take into their next match against Michigan State at the end of this week. “We know what we need to work on now,” Tunitis said. “Today really just highlighted what needs to be done in practice this week.” The Scarlet and Gray will finish their regular season with four road games, the first being Friday as they take on Michigan State at 3 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich. read more

Yes For Salmon Certified For The 2018 Ballot

first_imgVoters will determine if the Alaska law governing development in salmon habitat should be updated, something not done since statehood in 1959. If the Alaska Legislative session ends on time, the initiative will be bound for the primary election. Leaders across the state can now see how important this issue is to all Alaskans.” The Stand for Salmon initiative would restrict interference with salmon habitats  during a development project, like the proposed Pebble Mine.According to the Stand for Salmon website, the initiative would formally define characteristics of a healthy river in state law, update state listings of waters which support salmon, requires the state to notify the public of projects which could affect salmon and create salmon-protection standards developers must meet before their projects can move forward.
