first_imgFormer Republic of Ireland international Rory Delap has announced his retirement from soccer.Rory DelapThe 37-year-old, who has strong connections to Donegal, made 11 appearances for Ireland.Delap’s uncle is well-known Letterkenny shopkeeper Paddy Delap and the player often visited Donegal. Rory called time on his career after struggling to recover from a torn hamstring.He played with Southampton, Derby, Sunderland and Barnsley but it was with Stoke City where he enjoyed the best spell of his career.The midfielder joined Stoke in 2006, helping them to win promotion to the Premier League and his long throw-ins were a crucial weapon for the Potters.Signing a one-year contract with League Two side Burton Albion in the summer, Delap had hoped to prolong his player career but injuries and time have caught up with him.
